FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A busy hurricane season that saw the National Hurricane Center in Miami issue the first-ever tropical storm warning for the coast of California and hurricane warnings as far north as Nova Scotia is coming to a close Thursday night. “The 2023 hurricane season does show that we can get impacts just about everywhere," said Michael Brennan, director of the hurricane center. A year earlier, a strong storm surge during Hurricane Ian resulted in multiple deaths and significant destruction across southwest Florida. She said she's more than relieved hurricane season is ending. “So it's either hurricane season, or you're getting ready for the next hurricane season," he said.

ESTERO, Fla. (AP) — If one was to break down Florida Gulf Coast’s scoring so far this season by position, this would be the mathematics:— 0% from guards. The Eagles have 16 players on their roster, and every one of them is listed at the same position: shooter. Some may seem like guards, some may have post moves like forwards or centers, but the Eagles just classify everyone the same way. There have been seven instances in Division I women's basketball history where a team finished a season with at least 393 made 3's. “And then we were like, ‘We’ll just put shooter.’ Most of our kids are really good shooters and for other kids, it’s aspirational.

Hurricanes affect marine life differently, depending on whether they can move or are stationary. After a hurricane, increased levels of freshwater, bacteria, and debris can also harm marine life. A vast array of marine life lives along the Florida peninsula, the US state where hurricanes make landfall most often. What happens to marine life during a hurricane? For example, alligators on Sanibel Island, which Hurricane Ian hit hard, were affected by the saltier ocean water the storm brought on land.

It could be the first major hurricane at Category 3 or stronger to hit the Big Bend region. ET, with sustained winds 120 mph winds that are projected to grow stronger as it approaches the state, the hurricane center said. Tampa, well south of the projected landfall area, was also bracing for Idalia’s wrath and seeing storm surge beginning to flood streets Tuesday. • Much of Florida under state of emergency: DeSantis has issued an emergency declaration to 49 of 67 Florida counties. “Idalia is likely to still be a hurricane while moving across southern Georgia, and possibly when it reaches the coast of Georgia or southern South Carolina on Wednesday,” the hurricane center said Tuesday evening.

Idalia is expected to intensify into a hurricane Monday and make landfall on Wednesday morning near the Big Bend of Florida as a dangerous major hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center. As the storm intensifies, “life-threatening storm surge and dangerous winds” are “becoming increasingly likely for portions of Florida,” the hurricane center said early Monday. “Idalia has been moving erratically and is nearly stationary,” the hurricane center added. Tropical storm conditions are possible in the Dry Tortugas beginning late Monday and along the Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday. The government of Cuba has upgraded the tropical storm warning for Pinar del Rio to a hurricane warning.

Memphis authorities on Friday released videos from multiple vantage points showing the aftermath of the traffic stop. Five Memphis police officers were fired and charged with second-degree murder, and other crimes, including aggravated assault and kidnapping. Georgetown Law professor and NBC News legal analyst Paul Butler appeared on MSNBC Saturday to discuss the release of the Nichols video. Video shows Nichols escaped while on the ground and an officer shot a stun gun at him. “The bottom line is there were sufficient number of officers to do as such and to get him corralled and handcuffed at that traffic stop.

By late Tuesday night, tropical storm-force winds generated by Ian extended through the Florida Keys island chain to the southernmost shores of the state's Gulf Coast, the NHC said. U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Deanne Criswell said she worried that too few Florida residents were taking the threat seriously. 1/6 A hurricane evacuation route sign is displayed as Hurricane Ian spins toward the state carrying high winds, torrential rains and a powerful storm surge, in Punta Gorda, Florida, U.S. September 27, 2022. If Ian strikes the Tampa area, it would be the first hurricane to make landfall there since the 1921 Tarpon Springs storm. But officials said Hurricane Ian had proven too much, knocking out power even in far eastern Cuba, which was largely unaffected by the storm.
Sept 28 (Reuters) - More than 169,000 homes and businesses were without power in Florida as Hurricane Ian approached the state's west coast on Wednesday, according to local power companies. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Ian was moving onshore and would cause catastrophic storm surge, winds and flooding in the Florida Peninsula. The storm was located about 45 miles (75 km) west-northwest of Naples, Florida, and was packing maximum sustained winds of 155 miles (250 km) per hour at 11 a.m. EDT (1500 GMT). Florida Gulf Coast residents emptied grocery shelves, boarded up windows and fled to evacuation shelters as Hurricane Ian barreled closer on Wednesday, lashing the state's southern tip hours before it was forecast to make U.S. landfall. Hurricane Ian is speeding toward the Gulf Coast of Florida at a perilous time for property owners in the state, who have been weathering an insurance crisis that the Category 3 storm could now exacerbate. “Florida’s property insurance market was the most volatile in the U.S. before Hurricane Ian formed and will most likely become even more unstable in the wake of the storm,” said Mark Friedlander, a director at Insurance Information Institute in Florida. These issues have created problems in the market that have shepherded many insurers toward closure or left them on precarious financial footing. A dozen insurance companies operating in Florida have gone out of business since January 2020. The insurance crisis is largely the result of countless roofing scams in which contractors and attorneys file numerous fraudulent damage claims on behalf of homeowners and force insurance companies to settle, NBC News previously reported.
Housing prices, combined with the rise of remote work, threaten to end the middle-class dream of spending your final days in Florida. "It does put the retirement industry at risk because it's going to become more and more difficult" to retire in Florida, he told me. The political influence of Florida retirees is so significant that national publications send reporters to The Villages before elections to check its political pulse. The dream of a Florida retirement is dying as housing prices make it too expensive for most. And for people who are retiring now, the Florida retirement dream is starting to look a lot less sunny.
Florida high schoolers attending a public college are required to meet civic literacy requirements. Academics in the Sunshine State are unsure if Donald Trump could pass the exam. Insider asked four college professors whether they think Trump could pass the test. Rick Bowmer/AP'Real history and civic responsibility'Since 2019, many future college students in Florida are required to take the Florida Civic Literacy Examination — a test modeled after the US Citizenship and Immigration Services Naturalization Test to encourage civic literacy in the Sunshine State. To pass the Florida Civic Literacy Examination specifically, students must answer 48 out of 80 questions correctly — 60% or higher.
